The Cinnamon Teal is a more tropical relative of the Blue-winged Teal, although their ranges overlap in the western part of North America. The females of the two species are almost identical, although the males have quite different plumages.

The pair bond is quite strong in this species, with the male remaining on guard near the nest until the ducklings hatch in 26-28 days.
