This bird is found in woody country from northern India and Assam thru the Philippines and New Guinea to eastern Australia.

The female is brownish where the male is purple and she lacks the white on the shoulder.

Its nest is more substantial than that of most pigeons. The 2 pale creamy eggs hatch in about 12 days and 2 or 3 broods may be raised in a season.
