This fowl has its roots in midieval Belgium. It was sought after as an excellent table fowl. It suffered major declines during both World Wars, but in the 1970s some small flocks were found and used to rebuild its populations, tho' it is still quite rare.

Although with its rose comb and cuckoo pattern it is reminiscent of the Dominique, the Izegem Cuckoo is several hundred years older and half again as large.
