These fowl were developed in Bulgaria. Local red hens were crossed with Rhode Island Red males to create this dual-purpose breed. Roosters weigh 3-3.7 kg (6-7 lb) and hens 2.5 kg (5 lb).

They produce 200-220 brown eggs per year. They are early maturing birds, with yellow skin and red earlobes. They have a single comb.
